What is Wix?

Wix is a free online non-code website tool that allows users to create responsive websites using drag and drop tools.

  • Create websites, ePortfolios or blogs
  • Use templates or design from scratch

What do I Need to Use Wix?

Create a Wix account using an email or Google account.

Website Setup:

After logging in to Wix, select Create your Website. Wix will walk you through the set up process by asking these questions:

  1. What kind of website are you creating? School project is a good choice for assignments.
  2. What would you like to call your website?
  3. What would you like to add to your website (additional functionality called Wix apps)?
  4. Start designing. Choose from a template or customize your site.

Collaboration:

Working on a group project? To begin, choose one group member to create the Wix account (account owner). The account owner will invite the other group members to collaborate following these steps:

  1. Go to your dashboard (home page)
  2. Click on Site Actions
  3. Select Add Collaborators
  4. Enter the email address of the person you want to invite (separate multiple email addresses with a comma)
  5. Select either website designer or manager to give your collaborators full access to edit the site.

Design Your Website

Customize the design and size of your website. You can change the colors, fonts, and sizes of text elements, adjust the layout of sections, and modify the background and overall theme of your site.

  1. Open the relevant page in your Editor
  2. Click Add Elements
  3. Click Text
  4. Select a text type:

    Themed Text: These text elements have been handpicked for you as they match your template's look and feel.

    Titles: Use for headings on your site to let your site visitors know what the pages or sections are about.

    Paragraphs: Use for most of the text on your site, and should contain most of your site's content.

Using Media

Images:

Wix provides free and fee based image libraries. You can also upload and use your own images. Image settings allow you to:

  • Add an alt tag for accessibility (required)
  • Crop, adjust quality, or apply filters
  • Add a link to the image
  • Apply an animation to the image

Videos:

Wix provides a free and fee based video library. You can also upload and use your own video. Video settings allow you to:

  • Provide a description of the video contents
  • Choose to allow videos to autoplay, loop, or create a play button

Publish

Before publishing your site, check the following:

  • View your site on a laptop and mobile device
  • Visual design (check colours and balance of white space)
  • Typography (fonts and concise writing)
  • Visual aids (check images and charts - balance of text and images)
  • Navigation of information (well organized, headings and logical order)
  • Content (check for spelling, grammar, and links are working)
  • Accessibility (images have ALT tags, headings are in logical order)

Create your website name and publish:

  1. From the Wix dashboard, choose setting, click website setting
