Introduction

Piktochart is a web-based application that allows users to easily create infographics. Embed interactive maps, charts, videos and hyperlinks in an infographic presentation or poster.

What do I need to use Piktochart?

Creating a free account:

  1. Using the latest version of Chrome or Firefox browsers, access Piktochart from the login button at the top of this page
  2. Click the SIGN-UP button, in the top right-hand corner
  3. Choose to sign-up using:
  • Google account
  • Create Account (You will have to authorize by email)

Collaboration:

  • Invite up to 3 additional members 
  • ONLY ONE person at a time can edit.

Using templates

In order to select the correct dimensions for a digital presentation, you want to start with a template that is using a wide screen format by following these steps:

From the Piktochart Dashboard

  1. Select Custom Sizes
  2. Using the drop-down menu, under Visual Size, select 16:9 (the wide screen)
  3. Click Create
  4. Your poster size will be 1024 x 577

Save your design:

Click My First Design, add the topic of your poster. Watch for correct spelling and grammar as this becomes your published URL and can’t be changed after you publish your work.

Layout, text, and graphics

Background options: Choose a background option based on your colour scheme or audience. Choose from:

  1. Background colour to match your design
  2. Background image (be careful not to choose simple backgrounds)
  3. Use an image as a background

Using the graphic options: Use the graphics options to use shapes to build your design.

  1. Select the Shapes and Icons menu
  2. Search for a shape OR
  3. Browse through the Shapes – Basic
  4. Use the Lines options to insert vertical lines (rotate later for horizontal)

Heading and text options:

From the Piktochart menu, select Text to find sizing options:

  • Using the text menu, add a title block
  • Add sub-titles using the same font
  • Add your body text
  • Don’t forget to add your name(s) to your poster

Make sure that your font sizes are large enough to read:

  • Heading: Minimum 50pt
  • Subheading: Minimum 32
  • Body Text: Minimum 24
  • Captions: Minimum 18

Text formatting options: Use the formatting menu to change font style, size, add bullets, links or change alignment.

Graphics:

You will be able to insert icons, images, illustrations and more!

    • Choose Shapes and Icons
    • Search by for icons
    • Browse by category
    • Find an illustration of a person
    • Find free photos using Unsplash or Piktochart
  • Create a Chart: To create a chart, go to Tools in the menu on the left. Click on the Charts icon. A popup will appear that enables you to choose the best chart style for your data, coupled with a spreadsheet to input your data.
  • Insert your data by entering it in the cells, connecting to a Google spreadsheet or upload an Excel spreadsheet.
  • Once you have inserted the information and selected the correct visualization chart, click on the teal "Insert" button at the top right corner of the popup.

  • Chart menu: Use the chart menu to insert your own data or import from a spreadsheet.

Inserting video (YouTube or Vimeo):

  • To insert a video, follow these steps:
    • Choose Tools from the Piktochart menu
    • Click on the Videos icon
    • Insert a YouTube or Vimeo link in the box and select insert video

QR Codes:

Creating a QR Code and inserting it into your digital poster will allow viewers to quickly scan it to view on their own device. To create a QR Code, use Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome Browser.

  1. Click within the URL field
  2. Click the QR Generator button
  3. Click Download to save the QR Code

After you have created your QR Code, you can find it in your downloads folder. Following these instructions to upload your image to Piktochart.

Sharing and publishing your poster

For detailed instructions on how to share and publish your poster visit: Piktochart: Sharing and Publishing Visuals.

From the editor, after clicking on the “Save” button, next click “Share”. By default, only you can see your work online now.

Make sure to:

  1. Turn on the option to make this link public
  2. Click copy and sue the URL to submit for an assignment and email yourself a copy as a backup

Download a Copy of Your Graphic:

With a free Piktochart account, you can ONLY DOWNLOAD 2 FILES. After you have used up your credits, you will have to pay $3.50 USD for any additional downloads.
