How to Record Audio on Your Computer or Mobile Device

You can record audio from your desktop, laptop, or other mobile devices. Use the instructions shown below to learn how to record and save an audio file.

PC (Windows)

Most laptops have a built-in microphone or you can use a headset with a microphone. 

  1. Click the Start menu at the bottom of your computer screen
  2. Search for Voice Recorder, and click the top result to open the app
  3. A popup window may appear that says Let Voice Recorder access your microphone? Select Yes
  4. Click the Record button and click the square Stop button to complete your recording 
    • (Optional) Click the Flag button to add a marker to the recording
    • (Optional) Click the Pause button to stop recording without terminating the session
  5. Rename the file by right-clicking and selecting Rename (the default name is Recording)

Mac

All Macs (laptops and desktops) come with a built-in microphone.

  1. Go to your Applications folder
  2. Open QuickTime Player
  3. Click File > New Audio Recording
  4. Click the red record button to begin recording
  5. Click the black stop button to stop recording
  6. Go to File  >Save As to save your file to your desired location

iPhone

  1. Open the Voice Memos app (all iPhones have this app, and it can't be deleted)
  2. Press the red record button to begin recording
  3. Press the red stop button to stop recording
  4. Tap Done
  5. Type a name for your recording
  6. Press Save
  7. Tap your recording
  8. Press the share icon and email or AirDrop the file to another computer or device


Android

Each Android device is different. Your device may have an app installed already. Look for apps called recorder or voice recorder. You may have to download one from the Google Play store. These are the basic instructions for most voice recorders on Android.

  1. Locate or download a recorder app on your phone and click to open
  2. Press the Record button to begin recording
  3. Press the Stop button to end the recording
  4. Tap your recording to share

Screencasting

Screencasts are recordings of your computer screen which can include audio. Use these tools to teach or share ideas in a screencast. If you need to change your screencast recording, use an editing tool.
