There are two types of Microsoft Applications: desktop applications and online (browser applications). It is important to know the difference and limitations of these two types Microsoft applications since many Microsoft applications have a version of each (for example, Word Online and Word desktop).
Desktop vs Browser Applications
Desktop Applications
- Applications typically need to be downloaded to a computer before they can be used unless your computer came with pre-installed software
- Certain Microsoft applications require downloading and installation on the desktop as they are not available online (for example Microsoft Access).
- Typically, desktop software has the full range of functionalities that the software is capable of performing.
Online (Browser Application)
- The application launches on most web browsers and does not require a download. The sole requirements for using the application are internet access and an up-to-date web browser.
- Generally have less functionality than their desktop counterpart
- Your files are automatically saved and can be accessed from any computer or mobile device.
Finding Desktop Applications
The simplest method to locate desktop applications is by utilizing the search function in Windows, found on the taskbar at the screen's bottom. If the application has been installed successfully on your computer, it will appear in the search results.
If you are unable to find the applications using the search bar, you can click on the Windows Button and go to All Apps and scroll through all installed applications on your computer and see if you can locate the application.
If you are still unable to find the application you are looking for, it is possible that it was not installed on your computer correctly. Try downloading and installing the application again.
Finding Online (Browser) Applications
To find Microsoft browser applications, first log in to the Microsoft 365 Portal with your MohawkID and password. Then click on the menu icon at the top-left corner of the window.
Here you can search for the available browser applications, or click on More apps to show a list of all applications.
