Introduction

Respondus is a software company that offers assessment applications for education. Mohawk College utilizes two of their products, LockDown Browser and Monitor, to facilitate online proctoring.

What are the Respondus system requirements?

Before Your Test/Exam:

 

Compatibility:

  • Windows: 10, 11 (Not supported in "S mode" or via the App Store)
  • Mac: macOS 10.13+
  • iOS: iPad (iOS 11.0+, check with your instructor for compatibility)
  • Chromebook: Requires ChromeOS from Google's LTS channel

 

Additional Requirements:

  • Webcam & Microphone: Internal or USB-connected
  • Internet: Broadband (Ethernet connection recommended)

Installing Respondus LockDown Browser

If an instructor has required you to use LockDown Browser when taking a quiz in MyCanvas, you must download and install the software before you can start. Once installed, it will be available for all future quizzes.

Installing LockDown Browser on PC & Mac
  1. Download Respondus LockDown Browser
  2. From the Respondus LockDown Browser download page, click on the Install Now button to begin

  3. Locate the download file and double-click the file to begin the setup process. Follow the instructions to install LockDown Browser
    • When complete, Windows users will see a LockDown Browser icon on their desktop and in the start menu. Mac users will see the LockDown Browser icon in their Applications.

Download LockDown Browser on a Chromebook

If you have a Chromebook, follow these instructions:

  1. Log into MyCanvas on Google Chrome and navigate to the quiz/test that Requires Respondus LockDown Browser

  2. On the next page, click on Download Respondus LockDown Browser

  3. Click on the Add extension button

  4. From the next screen (Chrome web store), select Add to Chrome to install the LockDown Browser Extension

  5. You will see this confirmation message:

    • Optional: You can pin the LockDown Browser extension to your browser bar by clicking the pin that appears beside it

  6. You must close Chrome, and then log back into Canvas again to start the test

If you experience any issues, try clearing your cache in your Chrome browser.

Download LockDown Browser on an iPad

Download the Respondus app for iPad from the App Store. If you have not installed it recently, make sure your app is up to date or delete it and reinstall. For detailed instructions, see: Can an iPad be used to take a LockDown Browser exam?

NOTE: In some cases, you may need to delete the Canvas Student app from the iPad to get Respondus to work.
System Check

To ensure LockDown Browser and the webcam are set up properly, do the following:

  1. Start LockDown Browser and login to MyCanvas
  2. Locate and select the Help Center button on the LockDown Browser toolbar
  3. Select the correct answer from the Are you using LockDown Browser by itself or with a webcam? window
  4. Run the System Check. If a problem is indicated, see if a solution is provided by clicking the Knowledge Base button.
  5. If you're using a webcam, run the Webcam Check and if necessary, resolve any issues.
  6. When you are done testing Respondus, exit the Help Center. From here, you can start your quiz.
Uninstalling LockDown Browser

Follow the instructions below to uninstall LockDown Browser. After uninstalling any software, always restart your computer.

 

Windows Computers

Option A

  1. Open the start menu
  2. Right-click on LockDown Browser and select uninstall

Option B

  1. Open the Windows Control Panel
  2. Select Programs and Features
  3. Right-click on LockDown Browser and select uninstall
    • If there are problems uninstalling through the Windows Start Menu or Control Panel, you can download and run the LockDown Browser installer a second time and select the option "Uninstall/Remove" when prompted. In some situations, we recommend re-installing LockDown Browser and then immediately running the installer again to remove LockDown Browser.

Mac Computers

  1. Open the Finder
  2. Select Applications
  3. Find and drag LockDown Browser to the trash bin
  4. Now empty the trash
    • If this method does not work, you can download and run the LockDown Browser installer a second time and select the option "Uninstall/Remove" when prompted. In some situations, we recommend re-installing LockDown Browser and then immediately running the installer again to remove LockDown Browser.

Using Respondus

Starting a Quiz from LockDown Browser
 
  1. Make sure LockDown Browser is installed
  2. Before starting, close all open programs on your computer
  3. Locate LockDown Browser on your computer and open it
  4. Select MyCanvas from the Choose Server dropdown menu
  5. You may be prompted to close a blocked program. You can do this by choosing Close Process from the popup window. Or, close LockDown Browser and close the blocked program before restarting.
  6. Log in to MyCanvas
  7. Navigate to the quiz within the course and select Begin

NOTE: Once a quiz has been started with Respondus LockDown Browser, you cannot exit until you have successfully submitted a completed quiz.

Starting a Quiz from Within MyCanvas
 
  1. Make sure LockDown Browser has been installed
  2. Log into MyCanvas using a regular browser
  3. Go to Quizzes and select the quiz that requires LockDown Browser
  4. Select Launch LockDown Browser
  5. You might be asked to shut down some of your open applications

NOTE: Once a quiz has been started with Respondus LockDown Browser, you cannot exit until you have successfully submitted a completed quiz.

Exiting Respondus LockDown Browser Early

If you experience an issue with Respondus LockDown Browser freezing or giving you a white screen while taking a test, exit the program and relaunch it by completing the following steps:

  1. Click the Red X button in the top right-hand corner of the Respondus LockDown Browser
  2. A pop-up prompt will appear – click the Close the browser button
  3. You will be asked to provide a reason for exiting in a text box pop-up. Enter your reason (e.g., browser froze) and click the Submit and close the browser button
  4. Return to MyCanvas and relaunch the quiz using the Launch LockDown Browser button

Using Respondus Monitor (WebCam)

Quiz Requiring Webcam (Respondus Monitor)

You may be required to use LockDown Browser (Respondus Monitor) with a webcam, which will record you during an online, non-proctored exam.

Equipment: Ensure your computer has a working webcam, microphone, and reliable internet. Use an Ethernet cable if your connection is slow.

Setup:
  • Follow the System Checks before the test if using a different setup from previous attempts.
  • Take the exam in a quiet location free from interruptions.
  • Turn off and remove all other devices.
  • Clear your desk of unpermitted materials.

During the Exam

  • Know the exam duration and allow enough time to finish.
  • Stay at your computer until the exam is submitted.
  • LockDown Browser prevents access to other sites or apps; you cannot exit until you finish and submit the exam.

Tips for a Good Webcam Video

  • Avoid hats with brims.
  • Use a stable surface (e.g., desk) to avoid movement.
  • Do not tilt the screen after webcam setup.
  • Ensure the room is well-lit, avoiding backlighting.
What does it mean to be flagged on Respondus Monitor?

Respondus Monitor generates a list of events from a recorded exam session. Flags are events where a problem might exist, whereas milestones are general occurrences such as when the exam started, or when a question was answered.

 

Flagged events may include (but are not limited to):

  • The learner missing from the video frame
  • A different or new person in the video
  • Multiple people in the video
  • An internet interruption occurrence
  • Low video frame rate – due to poor quality internet connection
  • Student exited LockDown Browser early
  • Webcam disconnected
  • An attempt was made to switch to another software application
  • The video session ended early

 

Milestone events may include:

  • Start of exam
  • Pre-Exam – e.g. environmental scan
  • Answering a question
  • End of exam

Live Help for Respondus Monitor (Webcam)

Live chat help is available within LockDown Browser when using the webcam proctoring feature (Respondus Monitor). Chat agents can assist you with pre-exam issues related to the webcam and microphone.

Live chat is accessible from several places in LockDown Browser:

  1. Within the pre-exam steps. When working through the pre-exam steps for using a webcam with LockDown Browser, select It's not working at any time to access live chatstudent-photo.png
  2. Within Help Center, select the Need More Help? buttonneed-help2.png

Both options will walk you through a troubleshooter before beginning a chat with an agent. For technical issues that cannot be solved via live chat, you can open a ticket with Submit a Request – Respondus Support.

Troubleshooting

The following instructions are for students who are unable to open LockDown Browser on their computer.

Program Interference

Some programs could be interfering with LockDown Browser. To resolve this, follow these steps:

  1. Close all open programs on your computer before you launch LockDown Browser. If you are unsure what is open check the Taskbar (Windows) or Quit Apps on a Mac.
    • You can leave your wireless/network connections and/or anti-virus programs running
  2. Try to launch LockDown Browser again

If you are still unable to launch LockDown Browser, proceed to Resolution 2.

Re-Install

  1. Uninstall LockDown Browser from your computer.
  2. Clear the cache (again) by following the instructions in Resolution 2.
  3. Download and reinstall LockDown Browser following the directions in the Installing Respondus Lockdown Browser section
